Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) - To fertilize the egg, a single sperm is injected into a mature oocyte.

Embryo Biopsy - Trophectoderm cells (those that form the placenta) from the embryo are gently aspirated and sent to UC Davis for genetic analysis.

PreImplantation Genetic Diagnosis - The Equine Genetics Laboratory at UC Davis is capable of analyzing embryonic cells for the following genetic diseases, color and gender.

  • HERDA

  • HYPP

  • Cerebellar Abiotrophy

  • PSSM

  • Malignant Hyperthermia

  • Lethal White

Embryo Collapse and Vitrification - Embryos recovered by embryo flush (in vivo-produced embryos) are often too large to vitrify (freeze) without first being collapsed. The embryos produced by IVF can be vitrified without collapse.

Embryo Warming and Culture - Frozen embryos are warmed and cultured in a specialized incubator prior to transfer.

Time-lapse Microscopy - There is an association between embryonic cell division, as seen by time-lapse microscopy, and live birth in many species. In human IVF, this analysis is used in determining health and transfer of embryos. Preliminary studies suggest this association exists in horses as well.

In 2018, all clinical services offered for the past 25 years at Honahlee were transferred to the capable hands of Dr. Ryan Ferris, a theriogenologist from Colorado State University. Drs. Metcalf and Ferris work closely together to provide state-of-the-art IVF services. Dr. Ferris performs ovarian dissection and transvaginal oocyte aspiration for IVF as well as the embryo transfer.
